miamiherald: New Formula One points for 2010
Formula One will have a revised points system for the 2010 season. The International Automobile Federation said on Friday its World Motor Sport Council approved a proposal to award points to the top-10 finishers in each race.
According to a statement from the WMSC, “due to the expanded grid of 13 teams, and further to the recommendation of the F1 Commission, a new points system will be in place for the 2010 season.”
Race winners will receive 25 points, with 20 points awarded to second place and 15 for third. The next seven finishers will be scored in the following order: 10-8-6-5-3-2-1.
Under the current system, the top-eight finishers are awarded in a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 sequence. Ten teams made up the starting grid for the 2009 season.
The 2010 season begins March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix and concludes November 14 with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Brazilian Grand Prix, originally scheduled as the season-finale, will run one week earlier on November 7.
